Beyond the Classroom

Fostering young minds through experiential learning

At devLIFT, we believe in the importance of meaningful educational opportunities that go beyond the four walls of the classroom. However, rural students with household financial limitations often aren't able to avail these opportunities as opposed to their urban or higher-income counterparts. To this end, we took the initiative to provide financial support and subsidize an educational trip to the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun for the students of the rural schools we partner with. This support enabled more children to participate in this invaluable experience, fostering curiosity and deeper learning.

The Forest Research Institute (FRI), originally established as the Imperial Forest Research Institute during British Colonial rule in 1906, is a testament of India's colonial past, an architectural marvel and a hub of ecological knowledge. Its significance extends to the Grade 9 CBSE curriculum (India & Contemporary World - History; Chapter 4: Forest Society and Colonialism), making it a perfect destination for experiential learning.

To maximize the educational impact, devLIFT conducted a special workshop a day before the trip. This session introduced students to the history of FRI, forest laws under colonial rule, and the current state of forests and conservation efforts in India. The workshop was aimed at equipping students with the background knowledge, so they would approach the trip with enhanced curiosity and a readiness to learn.

During the visit, teachers played an active role in guiding the students, pointing out key features and offering insights that connected the site to their studies. By blending history, science, and conservation, this trip's purpose was not only to enrich their understanding of the subject they would all study in the coming years inside the classroom, but also inspired them to think critically about the role of forests in our ecosystem.

devLIFT conducted an interactive economics seminar, "Basics of Economics", to introduce students to the building blocks of the discipline. Money, banking, inflation and the role of government in the economy were among the topics covered. The session was aimed at generating awareness and interest in the subject, preparing the younger students for 9th and 10th-grade economics while also inspiring the older ones to consider it for higher studies.

Through real-world examples and engaging discussions, we strived to make the concepts stick in the minds of young students. The session also encouraged critical thinking about economic policies and decision-making.
